I'm pretty sure that i486's are before the era of USB (though I'm not at the machine just now). Interesting suggestion though.

Is there such a thing as a USB-to-PC-Card adapter or a USB-to-serial adapter, or even a PC-Card CD-ROM?

Lack of memory, lack of CD drive (I know that can be worked around, but it would be painful), lack of disk space, lack of processing power.

It's one of those classic Thinkpads with the butterfly keyboard, so I want to keep it doing something useful, but it can't really be a useful portable machine anymore (10" screen, i486, limited memory, limited disk, dead battery). Firewall in a home DSL or cable context is a perfect use for it.

I did update to use iptables instead of ipchains, but I'll keep running 7.3 until it's dropped by FedoraLegacy. Then I'll have to figure out how to install one of the firewall distros without a CD drive.
