From /, you can also run:
du -shx *
This will take a while, but it will tell you the total size of each
root subfolder. Once you figure that, e.g., /usr is taking up most of
your space, you can cd into /usr and run it again.

I have a Redhat machine which is getting to full capacity on the / root
partition. I have removed things in /var/log but it did not really clear
allot of space. Could someone tell me what other areas i can look at
clearing out?
