Perhaps this is not the answer you are looking for, but maybe you can
install another distro (Fedora or an older CENTOS) to get driver
support.
Also, could using a virtual server work? I am just wondering if you can
place something like CENT as the host OS then run VMWare and maybe
create a
virtual machine with RHEL5? Perhaps this VM will not require direct
hardware support for the controller? You might be able to virtualize
part
of your infrastructure as well and run a legacy OS which supports your
controller - then, include this box in the virtual infrastructure.

Maybe the real question is why is it that you need to run RHEL5 on a 4
year
old box? I am not saying there is a problem with it, but is it
essential
that REHL5 is run on this one?

Just some thoughts for you...

Hi.

I checked Adaptec's site first thing, but no luck (unless you want to
install Windows or SUSE).

A bit of research told me that I *should* be able to use the i2o driver
for it, and I've gotten it as far as installing. But somehow the grub
bootloader doesn't work.

I found http://i2o.shadowconnect.com/rhel.php but after following those
instructions I'm still at a point where, on bootup, I only get the word
'GRUB' on the screen and that's it.

I believe the i2o driver, which I manually specified during the install
with 'linux noprobe' etc. etc. doesn't load up again after a reboot, for
some reason.

Still working on it, but any suggestions will be appreciated!

Matt,

Good question, and a very valid point. But anyway, this box is kind of
a test-lab Oracle server, and needs to be RHEL5 for that purpose. I
believe it will be pretty heavily used, so virtualizing it won't happen
- I'll bet my last penny on that, and on the Springboks, by the way! :)

I think the next thing to do is to perhaps flash the Adaptec adapter's
BIOS to a newer version, and then see if the driver will load...I'm
pretty certain that I've exhausted all other options for now.

Will see what the boss says on Monday...

I will look at webmin.

I've installed it on a number of our servers in the "lab" at work, and I
like it a lot. First, it installs (unlike certain other software I can
think of), and figures itself out, and it's up and running. Second, it
does about 90% of the systems admin stuff very nicely - playing with
ldap and PAM was a lot easier with it.

Do you mean where you use the URL localhost:631/printers?

It doesn't give me as many options with the drivers on the printers
as did printtool.

You may need to install other drivers. I recently got an HP 1018
laserjet at home, and had to ->build<- the driver, plus set up cups so
that when it rebooted, it automagically d/l some firmware into the
printer.

Check out cronolog .. cronolog.org .. I have a patched version that
allows running as another user (besides root) if needed.

Check out /etc/logrotate.d/ - There is an httpd log rotation file there.
