Quad core vs 2 x dual-core?

I have a dual-core Precision 690 system whose application dictates 4 cores.

As such, are there any known performance issues or anything else that would differentiate my adding a second same-type dual-core processor vs swapping/replacing the existing dual-core with a single quad-core processor?
