Downloaded the mantel 2.4.21 kernel from
ftp.suse.com:/pub/people/mantel/next/RPMS/ and now I can mount and umount
the ipod as expected. The biggest problem now is the NVIDIA kernel module
don't compile with this kernel, so I currently don't have a running Xserver.
I haven't found anything from the nvidia drivers forum that resolved this
(other than someone using a version of the drivers that aren't listed).

I'll try to post more specific things when I get home tonight.

    EN272 , but
the new modules seem to require a new architecture.

What I can do currently with the 1394 drivers included with the default SuSE
kernel is mount the ipod and do a directory listing (but it takes some time
for that operation to complete or I get a kernel oops message and have to
    reboot the machine).

Has anyone come across a better method for SuSE 2.4.19-4GB kernels under 8.1
with the ipod? I feel like I'm really close and before I grab the latest
vanilla kernel, I wanted to make sure I don't more options to play with
    here.
