    Good day Richard,

This is the effect of SuSEWatcher -- the little green thingy in the
system tray, that looks after new updates.
Whenever you log in, it places storage device icons on your desktop on
the fly (if they are not in the Desktop folder), and seemingly tells
the desktop to arrange its icons.

Unfortunately the only cure I have seen so far is this:

Open Konq the filemanager and navigate into the Desktop folder.
On your desktop, outside Konq, select the storage device icons you
want on your desktop, and copy them to the Desktop folder.
    Close Konq.
Click SuSEWatcher and tell it _not_ to start automatically when you
    log in. I.e. disable SuSEWatcher.
    Log out and log in.
Now you can place your icons where you want them, and they will stay
    put.

SuSEWatcher will be gone, but you can check for new updates manually
    with YaST2.

    Best regards :o)
