    First, apologies, I meant to post my reply to the list, I see
    you've forwarded it so no harm done.

    Secondly, I had essentially the same problem as you yesterday,
    albeit with different kernel version and under 8.1, see Jerry
    Feldman's post from earlier today (thread "ltmodem and SuSE 8.1").
    Briefly, I installed anyway as you did, but it worked (the second
    time).

    I'd guess you need a specific athlon version (although a net search
    didn't turn one up), or you might try compiling it from source.
