    How "make-shift"? As in duct-tape-make-shift or soldering-make-shift?

The weird part being that you get nice and loud signals to the playback.
Because otherwise, what you're describing sounds (no pun) very much like the
symptoms of a balanced signal, with the 'hot' and 'cold' wires 'crossed'.

Now, I have a hard time believing that the crappy pc-mic would deliver a
balanced output, but I think that you might want to have a look at wiring
    nevertheless.

Well, to be sure it's not PnP, but I don't think your problem is unsolvable.

What you need to determine is how the crap-mic matches your input. Which
basically comes down to "How exactly is the TRS-plug connected"

    Tip: +
    Ring: ?
    Sleeve: -

Some sort of connection tester would be handy, but otherwise use a battery +
    wires + lightbulb.

Presumably the plug on the pc-mic is of the cast-plastic type, so if you
can't open up the 'business-end' of the mic... chop the wire. Then use the
connection tester to map out which connection goes where, and duplicate that
    for the nice-mic.

Assuming none of the mics are balanced, you only have two connections coming
    out. So of all the possible combinations, pretty much only one makes sense;

    Tip: +
    Ring: +
    Sleeve. -

I think that sums it up. Except for the wire-mapping thing.

I agree that this is probably not a SW issue
