    I had the same problem on a Toshiba Satellite. If they are suspending &
    resuming the boxes they'll want to change the powermanagement config file to
    allow unloading of alsasound module upon suspension. It'll reload upon
    resuming. Also, make sure the volume is not at zero. Mine also does that,
    on occasion, even since I set the config file.
