I managed to get my smart media card to read by creading entries in fstab for
sdb, sdc, sdd and sde manually. it now works.
However, unless i know the exact directory name where the jpgs are stored
(it's from my digicam) I get corruption and invalid size values like this:

    linux:/media/sde1/dcim # ls
    ls: ?aà$
??.ª?/: No such file or directory
ls: h|?>??¡:.?o.: No such file or directory
ls: ks ??/ë_.u_: No such file or directory
ls: m5=./-?.¡c,: No such file or directory
ls: j?öé?±.£qw: No such file or directory
ls: u?v/óh .?°?: No such file or directory
ls: ?>>°öß¿u.;}/: No such file or directory
ls: l??▒?/^;.?mk: No such file or directory
ls: ?^kru?'m.æ/#: No such file or directory
ls: ?x?(]?aà.2/ù: No such file or directory
ls: ??/?$òg.?\á: No such file or directory
ls: ??¢?/$å.??: No such file or directory
ls: u?ê?v?÷?.??/: No such file or directory
?/: No such file or directory
ls: n/m?*a^.e?î: No such file or directory
ls: \/ô?ë=??.£?: No such file or directory
ls: i}¬ïî?¼?.òi.: No such file or directory
ls: ?????kë».«?.: No such file or directory
ls: *n?f?/$ö.£?: No such file or directory

    etc etc

    linux:/media/sde1/dcim # cd 100_fuji
    linux:/media/sde1/dcim/100_fuji # ls
    . dscf0014.jpg dscf0025.jpg dscf0036.jpg dscf0047.jpg

    dscf0013.jpg dscf0024.jpg dscf0035.jpg dscf0046.jpg

could this be to do with sector size or something like that?]
    my /etc/fstab:

    /dev/sda1 /media/sda1 auto noauto,user,exec 0 0 #HOTPLUG B3Fu.XgRj7x7sPp5
    /dev/sdf1 /media/sdf1 auto noauto,user,exec 0 0 #HOTPLUG B3Fu.65vJnGtOb_E
    /dev/sdb1 /media/sdb1 auto noauto,user,exec 0 0
    /dev/sdc1 /media/sdc1 auto noauto,user,exec 0 0
    /dev/sdd1 /media/sdd1 auto noauto,user,exec 0 0
    /dev/sde1 /media/sde1 auto noauto,user,exec 0 0

the top two are my USB drives...
