I have 2 Compaq Presario laptops running SuSE 8.2. They have been
running SuSE pretty much since I purchased them.
While the Compaq PC people are not very Linux fluent, the HP(formerley
Compaq, formerly Digital) up in New England (US) are very very Linux
fluent. Jon Maddog Hall is a former Digital employee. And the first
non-Intel platform that Linux was ported to was the Digital Alpha chip
in a full 64 bit implementation back in the 1994 time frame.
The problem with Compaq, Dell, Gateway et. al. is that the market is
very competitive, and since their market is well over 90% Windows, they
don't bother to test with Linux. (There is also a contractual thing
where they must preinstall Windows on those boxes).
During our Linux installfests, I've seen problems with all laptop
brands. (Compaq and IBM seem to be the best for Linux compatibility from
the standpoint of our experiences at the installfests).
