That's exactly the kind of scenario where scpm comes into play:

    user@linux:~> rpm -qi scpm
Name : scpm Relocations: (not relocateable)
Version : 0.9.1 Vendor: SuSE Linux AG,
    Nuernberg, Germany
    Release : 25 Build Date: Mon Mar 17 18:00:17
    2003
Install date: Fri Mar 21 19:40:41 2003 Build Host: Zert230.suse.de
    Group : System/Base Source RPM: scpm-0.9.1-25.src.rpm
    Size : 1758793 License: GPL
    Packager : http://www.suse.de/feedback
Summary : System Configuration Profile Management
    Description :
SCPM enables your system to save different configurations in
profiles. You can boot directly into a profile as well as
switch profiles at run time. It is the successor of scheme
    management.

Have a look at the YaST2 profile manager. It's a frontend to scpm.

scpm is also described in the green adminstration manual. Read this first
    befor you start using it.
