Norman,
It may indeed be that simple or even simpler. On my Compaq/HP laptop I
have the acpid package installed but not (as far as I know) in use.
Instead I blindly followed my colleage Will Helton's advice ...
Go in and edit /etc/init.d/boot.local with the following two lines:
modprobe ac
modprobe battery
Save and close then reboot machine. Works for me.
