Having found the same on my toshiba satellite. The solution came when i
decided to, as root,
# telinit 2
..
# cp /etc/X11/XF86Config /etc/X11/XF86Config.old
# sax2 -f
with the external monitor/ projector conected.
Since that, everythings goes fine
