I cannot remember, and could not as I wanted to copy the logfiles to my winxp
partition, to be able to look at them. I was not able to mount /windows/C due to a vfat
message.

As far as I remember it the verision you also have mentioned further down the lines.
I'll try if I can do it as I can do a failsafe boot.
No I did'nt compile the kernel, just as you say updated the system with Synaptic, and
I'm at all not a clever Synaptic user -at the present- Then I would do a reboot, and
encoutered the problems, maybe because I din't ran the SuSEconfig, ldconfig after
the finish of the work of Synaptic.

That's right.

I did mkinitrd and mk_initrd. Oh now my underscore doesn't work :-)

But I'll give it a try, but have the same idea about it as you have. I use Grub here.
