This isn't good ...
Have you tried going back to the aaa_base version on the cd?
Have you tried booting from the installation cd, and choosing boot installed
OS from the screen where it detects your hard drives and stuff?
For some odd reason mk_initrd has disappeared from your system.
Do you remember if you did a apt-get update before running upgrade?
If not when do you think the last time you ran apt-get update was?
I'd be willing to bet that you installed the messed up aaa_base and it has
wreaked havoc on your machine.
