It sounds like you are overheating something in the computer.
First of all, I am assuming the following: 1) your system crashes after
a while, but then if you let it cool off for a while, it reboots like
normal up until the next crash. 2) Red Hat worked without a problem so
the problem is new. 3) this is a homebrew computer.
While there is a tiny possibility that the Linux has a problem (in
electronics, a lot of things are possible), I highly suspect the problem
is the hardware.
My first thought is that either the HDD, memory or power supply is
overheating or bad. If it were the processor, the system would most
likely freeze up. Other items on the motherboard... ????, probably not.
You might first check the ventilation and fans on the computer. Are
they all clear and working properly? Do you have a fan on the chassis
vents pulling air in or out? Is the fans) on the processor working
properly? Do you have adequate fan for the processor? If so, I would
suspect that your problem is either the Hard Drive, Memory, or Power
Supply in that order. Do you have a spare hdd to work with? Try
exchanging the HDD for a while. If that works, then you may have found
it. If it fails, try the memory. Do you have more than one memory
stick? If you have a required pair, try swapping them and see if the
error is the same. If you get a different error, the memory may be the
problem. If you have 2 or more independent sticks or pairs try checking
the machine one stick or pair at the time. Still get the error with any
combination? It is probably the power supply. There is no easy test for
the power supply. I have a tester for the AT style power supplies, but
not the ATX which is what you most likely have. I need to build one
though.
You said it has new hardware and you are using an ASUS Mother board. I
am guessing that this is a home-brew computer. Regardless, today's
computers need more cooling than the minimum requirements of the
manufacturers suggestions. OEMs such as HP or IBM add additional fans
that small shops and home-brewers might not think they need. Make sure
there were no short-cuts on the processor cooling. If not there, you
may consider a muffin fan or two on the case of the computer, if
possible one blowing in at the bottom and one blowing out at the top, or
look at where air would enter the computer and what it would have to
flow across if the fans were both blowing outwards. Is your hard drive
next to your CD drive and/or floppy? Is there plenty of ventilation all
around the HDD? You may need extra air flow if it is up next to a CD
drive. Is it sandwiched between CD and DVD or second CD Drive? That's
bad news if it is.
Odds are you didn't touch or change the hardware when you changed from
Red Hat to SuSE. Hardware has a habit of breaking in coincidence with
unrelated acts such as new software installed, the doorbell ringing or
someone slamming the door. I hope your parts are under warranty and you
purchased them from a place that will exchange them or help you find the
problem without charging.
BTW, I might not know how to get a directory listing in Linux yet, but I
have been repairing hardware since '85.
I hope this helps and I hope you can get it resolved at no cost.
Good luck
Buck

Subject: [SLE] hda I/O error
I have been using RH9 but because of their move with Fedora core I am =
looking at Suse. I am having some troubles though. I have downloaded =
8.2 and installed 8.2 It will work for a few hours but then it crashes
= and when I reboot I get a I/O error on hda while booting. This has =
happened multiple times. I tried updating, not updating full install =
not full install. Any ideas???? I do have a newer hardware. p4 800FSB
= Asus p4c800.
