    Good morning.

    I will try to make only one follow up for all those who tried to help, many
    thanks to them.

    No swat still does not work.
    When calling http://localhost:901 from Konqueror, the answer is still :
    Impossible to connect to localhost (port 901).

    Inetd as well as xinedt are configured to launch swat.
    As far as I know the Suse firewall is not in place, unless it is implemented
    as default.
    I am not running Apache.

    netstat -anp , logged as root gave following results :
    Connexions Internet actives (serveurs et établies)
    Proto R-Q S-Q Adr locale A distante Etat PID/Program name
    tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:139 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 2689/smbd

    udp 0 0 0.0.0.0:631 0.0.0.0:* 1349/cupsd
    this is only the beginning of the list, but remaining seems irrelevant.
    port 901 is not there.
    z.z.z.z = internal IP adresses, hiden by myself.

    The followings are extracts of the file where I try to collect the
    modifications I am doing on the system :

    9 oct 2003 19:00

    File /etc/xinetd.d/samba was renamed swat and modified to contain the
    followings :
    service swat
    {
    port = 901
    socket_type = stream
    wait = no
    only_from = localhost
    user = root
    server = usr/sbin/swat
    log_on_failure += USERID
    disable = no
    }
    RESULT = nothing visible

    original file /etc/xinetd.d/samba file was containing :
    service swat
    {
    socket type = stream
    protocol = tcp
    wait = no
    user = root
    server = /usr/sbin/swat
    only_from = 127.0.0.1
    disable = yes
    }

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    10 oct 2003 10:00

    The file /etc/inedt.conf contains the line :
    swat stream tcp nowait.400 root /usr/sbin/swat swat

    The file /etc/services contains the following lines :
    swat 901/tcp # CONFLICT, not official assigned!
    smpnameres 901/tcp # SMPNAMERES
    smpnameres 901/udp # SMPNAMERES

    /usr/sbin/swat is pointing on :
            var/lib/samba/bin/swat , which is pointing on :
            usr/lib/samba/classic/swat

    Samba versions :
    Samba and samba-client 2.2.8a-34, installed vith yast2 , 26/9/2003 from Suse
    site.
    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

    By the way samba is working and visible from outside as Samba 2.2.8a - SuSE,
    but configuring the bloody thing without swat is a nightmare.

    regards.
