    To make my description clearer, I should add:

    This problem occurs on the LCD, with or without an external projector attached
    - I am trying to get it so that it displays on the LCD of the laptop, as well
    as on the external video feed.

    As soon as I hit function F5, the weird display problem occurs on the LCD, and
    stays that way through repeated cycling through additional function F5
    invocations.

    My sympathies on the WinXP thing. I greatly enjoyed wiping it from my Toshiba
    laptop when I bought it in June!
