Actually, I missed it. Thanks for reposting.
I happy to say that I have solved the problem. I mearly followed the
directions in 3Ddiag with one exception.
The execption is that in order to get the drivers to work I have to include
insmod <path> nvidia.o in the boot instructions. Once I did that I have the
4496 drivers working. The only problem remaining is that XWindows is very
slow starting, it takes several minutes, much longer than the last nvidia
drivers that worked on my system.
