For anyone who has a Compaq POS Presario 1260 and is trying to upgrade or
install SUSE 9.0, you might get the error message in the subject above.
There is some rather cryptic language in the Admin Guide as well as on the
net in various places but nothing that simply tells you that the problem may
be how your BIOS plays with Large drives ie LBA.
After futzing with this problem for several hours, I found a reference in the
SDB on Grub hanging when booting from SCSI harddrive. Even though mine is
IDE the article indicated the problem could be the way the BIOS tells Grub
about the LBA addressing. So I checked what the Compaq bios sets for LBA. It
gives you two choices, Other or Dos.
Of course this selection had been OTHER since SuSE 7.0 and worked fine til
now! The cure was to go into the BIOS and change the selection for large
drives from OTHER to DOS. Now if they have fixed the DMA wont enable
problem . . . .
Hopefully this message may save someone else lots of frustration and allow you
to upgrade your machine as I wanted to do.
