    Hi,

Im a bit confused about soft and hard limit in Linux.
    I have a /proc/sys/fs/file-max 26156 and I tried to enable via PAM
/etc/security/limits.conf a new limit for one user:

    tom hard nofile 8192

Then I enabled the /etc/pam.d/sshd and login for pam_limits.so
After boot I still can not change the limit of my user tom to 4096 !

I get all the time: cannot modify limit: Operation not permitted.
In /etc/profile there is no hard limit set.

    Now simple question:

    1. How can I setup a hard limit per system ? Is the /proc/sys/fs/file-max the
    hard limit ?

    2. How a user can increase the the file descriptor limit to the hard limit
    via .profile, ulimit etc !

Any documentation except the kernel documentation which is not 100% suitable
for SuSE because SuS has no /etc/sysctl mechanism by default .

    any ideas ?

    stefan
