    Check the following:
    1) Under the KDE "Info Centre" command have a look at "IO-Ports" you should
see an I/O-Range allocated for Parport0. If not you have probably a problem
    in your BIOS.

    2) Check to see if there is an entry in /etc/modules.conf for the parallel
    port.

3)The command ' /sbin/lsmod | grep parport' will give you a list of modules
loaded for the parport and should be similiar to below.

    parport_pc 28200 1 (autoclean)
    parport 25352 1 (autoclean) [parport_pc lp]

    4) To check you can send something to the parallel port, try (as root)
    echo "This is a test" > /dev/lp0
This should print something to the printer.

    5) Using a browser enter http://localhost:631/
and see if you can add the printer.

    6) Have a look at http://susefaq.sourceforge.net/cups.html

Hope that helps you finding out what the problem is.
