Martin -- you didn't say what window manager you are running,
but I am guessing it is kdm (kde)
If so, you problem is similar to person whoses machine
had "Reverse auto logon" problem.
So, go to System Administration --> Login Manager --->
(login in Administrator Mode ---> session --->
and then select "Only root"
if you want the behavior the second machine exhibits,
namely "logout from current session" only
or select "Everybody"
if you want the machine to act like your first machine
(ie logout current session, shutdown, or restart).
