Hi all,
Sound-on-Linux is my major weakness. All the other technical stuff is
classified as minor weaknesses :-) So here goes nothing..
I have a soundcard [big-deal] which is actually an nForce2 audio chipset
[supporting ac97 codec on board and] driven by i8x0 driver from alsa
[configured using YaST]. Clock setting was specified as 0 in the setup.
My problem was that when I played VCDs etc in Windows, all went fine. But
when I played VCDs in Linux, I had a really bad sound. The CD quality [or
close to it] sound sampled like a really bad mp3 [and this was before I
converted to mp3, while reading directly from VCD]. Mplayer tells the
sampling rate in the vicinity of 48000 bps. I have done enough googling,
so I may not be blamed for not trying :-)
I have the following questions
1. Setting this ac97_clock option to 0 means autodetect. Does it mean that
sampling rate of the card shall change depending upon the incoming
audio stream? Or does it mean that the clock speed [is that the same as
sampling rate?] shall be set to a default speed [seems like 48000 Hz]?
2. What else can I do here? I tried compiling and loading the nvaudio.o
module for this nForce based sound card. And I got it to work too -
with oss [kernel based] sound support - but probably did not configure
it very well - the results were not any better. So in the end went to
YaST.
The mobo is Asus A7N266-VM with integrated sound. If anyone can give me
any tips, it shall be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Rohit
