Yes, that was it. I installed the xft-builds for 1.5 and 1.6a from the
Mozilla site, and the fonts look fine now.

I'll second that! Being a bit of a newbie, I get a bit confused by
terminology such as xft, qt, and gtk. Guess I've got a lot to learn!
