OK, newbie to SuSE here, and sorta newbie to Lunix (have used RedHat, but
not really done any installs or config on it, just work). So, just assume
I'm a newbie with some knowledge of Linux.

I have SuSE 8.2, KDE 3.1.1, 2.4.0-4GB-athlon kernel, just to start. More
system info at the bottom of this post ...

I'm not enamoured with YaST2, but am using it in any event ... the problem
occurs when I try to go to the kernel configuration in the control center.
it says, "cannot open /usr/src/linux/arch//config.in for reading." I have
    searched for config.in in vain.

On another board, someone answered this with, "dont worry about it, unless
you are planning to compile a new kernel, you are prolly running Mandrake,
and accessing the kcmshell for kernel configuration. this mostly means you
prolly do not have the kernel headers installed."

Um ... ok. But what if I do want to recompile the kernel? It's not like this
is so uncommon, and I can imagine it will be happening. I know it can be
done through YaST2 as needed (as I've done it already), but am worried that
if I try to do it otherwise it will fail. Also, when I dmesg, it doesn't
say anything about the kernel version, but dumps a lot of other stuff.
Oddly enough (or maybe not), the front page of the control center names the
    kernel correctly.

On Linuxquestions.org, someone answered with, "the problem doesn't exist.
nothing to worry about, reinstall your kernel source if you want..."

OK, but somehow this doesn't make me feel any better ... Should I instruct
YaST2 to keep the sources when updating? Is that all that's needed? Am I
    worrying too much?

Also, I went to the KDE site to update it, as AFAIK YaST2 doesn't see
anything beyond what I have (3.1.1), and so downloaded Konstruct. However,
I ran into the same problem as others have, that when trying to install one
package it failed and produced a number of png-related errors, which is ...
well, I forget exactly what that means, but the solution recommended in
many places is to just do a make install in meta, which in my case produced
the same errors, but took much longer to get to that point. My reason for
wanting to do all this is that I want to install the new KAddressbook,
which has groups capabilities (I really dig KMail), though to do this you
need to install a whole package, which has dependencies and produces errors
on installing ... so, I thought, what the heck? why not just upgrade to KDE
3.1.4 ... well, obviously installing one small app within KDE is not so
simple, and neither is upgrading KDE to the newest version.

One more small question ... I like Konqueror but want Mozilla to be the
default web browser. Moz recommends changing this preference through the
control center in Internet & Networking>email, but there is no setting
there for this. Is there a URL handler somewhere that I can hack? There is
for GNOME, but don't know where it is in KDE ...

Anyway, TIA for any help, and, if there's anything wrong with posting these
questions here (as they are generally specific to KDE and not SuSE as
    such), please let me know.

System info (not a sig, just for info): Ghetto Box Galore - Athlon XP1700
(well cooled) on a PCChips M841 board mounted in a cheap, no-name ATX case,
onboard graphics - SiS740 (currently running a 650 driver under SuSE, but
will fix that tonight), 2-40GB HDD, 384MB SDRAM (64MB shared w/SiS740), TDK
indiDVD 440n burner, and a salvaged FDD and second CDROM drive (both quite
old, from Packard Hell machines), and other salvaged parts ... doesn't look
purty but it's my baby :)
