I'm not sure what went wrong. Synaptic downloaded the appropriate files
and then started installing them. I let it run for about an hour while
the only activity was the hour-glass symbol. If I moved another window
on top of the Synaptic windows, the windows did not refresh (stayed
blank) when they reappeared. When I finally decided that something was
wrong, I discovered that I couldn't close Synaptic using the Close
button nor the window close box. I logged out and logged back in. This
closed Synaptic but when I tried to use Synaptic again, it said that it
could not obtain a lock on the packages directory. Coming from the MS
Windows environment, I decided to try the standard Windows
troubleshooting technique (I rebooted the system). This seemed to work.
I can now use Synaptic. I can open Gnumeric which opens with the correct
version (1.2.2). I can save the gnumeric file and it shows up with the
correct icon and if I click on the icon, gnumeric loads and opens the
file. The only thing that's not working at the moment is that there is
no icon (well, the default gear wheel icon) for MS Excel files and if I
click on the icon, nothing happens. If I try to "open with", there's no
applications listed. If I try to associate an application, it either
tells me to enter a MIME type or it disappears without changing
    anything. Any thoughts?
