It seems that you have a Nvidia card.
If you have a Nvidia card, you have to reinstall the nvidia driver.
So, download the latest nvidia installer from nvidia wed site, and install the kernel source package of the latest suse kernel for 7.3.
Log as root in a console (ctrl+Alt+F2), go to runlevel 3 by typing init 3, install kernel source rpm,
cd to /usr/src/linux
make cloneconfig
make dep
then cd to /where/you/download/nvidia-installer and run the installer by typing
sh nividia-installer-XXXX.sh
tell it you want to compile your own kernel driver.
when finished just type init 5
X should work now.

I upgraded my 7.3 kernel from 2.10 to 2.18 to get the latest security
fixes. Alas, the X server won't start. In /var/log/messages, I get :
Dec 9 10:57:52 franks modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module char-major-195
Dec 9 10:57:53 franks kdm[1799]: IO Error in XOpenDisplay
Dec 9 10:57:53 franks kdm[1790]: Display :0 cannot be opened
So it looks like I need to build something... What did I do wrong in
the update cycle?
