I always have problems logging off gnome - using 8.2 and SuSE packages
only. Not the same as described by Mark, but very similar:
When I select log-out from the menu, I get the the dialog box; I click,
and wait, and wait, and wait... nothing, it can be many long minutes. The
panels do not respond, however, non-gnome applications continue working
and responding. Often I exit with ctrl-alt-backspace.
Then I remembered that I have some xterms opened on another workspace. If
I switch to that workspace using the keyboard (it is impossible clicking
with the mouse on the Workspace Switcher on the panel), as soon as those
xterms display then gnome logs off.
Some months earlier, I did not have those xterms on the 3rd workspace, but
I had (and still have) some on the first workspace - I could not log off
till I clicked on one xterm.
For some reason it seems as if gnome needs the xterms to have the focus to
be able to close/kill them and log off. Perhaps it is trying to kill them
well mannered - and when they refuse, it has to kill them forcibly. Just a
wild guess :-)
