I failed to mention that this was the text version of yast not the gui
version.

Subject: yast software raid wizard broken - partitioner - SuSE 8.1
Cannot enable raid_1 for a existing hda 0x83 partition to a hdc 0xFD
partition using the yast partitioner raid wizard. If someone has
successfully used the wizard to setup RAID after the system has already been
installed with 4 IDE drives but later decided to enable raid level 1?
