I recently d/l and installed (with yast2) xine and OOo rpms from packman.
These are SUSE 8.2 specific rpms.
I got no error messages or suchlike during the process.
Now, if I try to run OO from the command line I get this:
Jake@linux:~> OOo
Trying to use older configuration ///home/Jake/OpenOffice.org...
/home/Jake/.sversionrc updated
Warning: The file
/home/Jake/OpenOffice.org/user/registry/data/org/openoffice/Setup.xcu does
not exist
Trying to repair configuration...
Error: The configuration can not be repaired
Preparing to use the default configuration...
Old configuration will leave in /home/Jake/OpenOffice.org
New configuration will be saved in /home/Jake/OpenOffice.org1.1

Updating .sversionrc...
/home/Jake/.sversionrc updated
Installing default (en) configuration...
Error: The default configuration was not created.
Error: Try again or try to run "OOo-wrapper --skip-check"
______
Jake@linux:~> OOo-wrapper --skip-check

nothing.
I look for the directory /home/Jake/OpenOffice.org1.1 but it does not exist.
I try editing the .sversionrc file. No joy.
OK one thing I've learned from this list, read yr error mesages carefully.
It starts with a "trying to use older config" message.
So I guess my new version is missing something.
Yast ran suseconfig after installing the rpm, so duh. i must be missing
something obvious.
I have even less joy with xine.
It has gone from my menu and "command not found" from the CLI.
I think perhaps there might be other related rpms I must install to get these
apps to work. So I go back and to packman and see some language specific
rpms. I d/l the OOo-en rpm (I'm an English speaker). YAST informs me that
this is the German localisation package. I'm confused, but go ahead anyway.
Again, no messsages from yast. Now, excellent, I have my new OOo. And very
much better than the old one it looks too (I use office applications a lot).
No sign of any German, for which I'm grateful, as I don't speak it.
So I think to myself, perhaps I also missed something with xine. Off I go back
to packman... installed various rpm's for xine, and lo and behold, xine works
now.
I guess I'm not asking a question here, just a heads-up for other newbies to
Linux. The lesson being, be methodical and check back regarding what you
install and where from and so on. Other rpm's may be needed other than the
one you're installing to get it to work, and you won't necessarily get a
message telling you. With the exception of the German localisation thing (or
am I missing something here?) all the errors were mine. I didn't pay close
enough attention.
YAST is a seriously good tool, IMHO it's what seperates our SUSE from the
bunch.
