    A recent article I read noted three SATA controllers/chipsets presently
    supported by the 2.4.xx kernel and all should be well supported under
    the 2.6.x kernel. Those listed were:

    3ware Escalade 8500 card--3w-xxxx driver
    Silicon Image chipset
    Intel ICH5 -- 2.4.22 kernel

    Hope that helps others buying a mobo with SATA.
