The first thing to do is work out what the chipset of the modem is.
Linmodem is like saying "PC" - it is a generic term that covers a lot
of chipsets within that class.
Now then, I cannot help you on this problem, but a bit more info would
be helpful for others on the list. They may need more info, and the
"command outputs" I ask for below may/may not help, but I would start
with this when trying to diagnose such a situation:
Make: Compaq [you stated this above, good :)]
Model:
Output of the following commands:
lspci
pnpdump
