Hi List:
I have a Dell Optiplex GX1 on which I am trying to configure SuSE 9.0. The
only hitch so far is the soundcard. It is detected as a Crystal
Semiconductor sound card and the sound module that the installation chose
is cs4236. This machine ran SuSE 8.2 before which worked just fine out of
the box with sound and all. Upgrading to 9.0 was possible, but when the
kernel was rebooted I ended up with a kernel panic upon loading the sound
module. The sound system yields an audible crackling sound when the module
gets loaded and then the system hangs. I am only able to boot the system
by disabling the relevant modules in my modules.conf file, i.e.,
commenting out all the snd-related entries from the previous 8.2
installation:
----------- snip -------------------
# copied entries from old installation
alias eth0 3c59x
#alias char-major-116 snd
#alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
#alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
#alias snd-card-0 snd-cs4236
#alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
#alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
#alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
#alias sound-service-0-11 snd-mixer-oss
#alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
#options snd-cs4236 snd_enable=1 snd_index=0 snd_isapnp=1
#options snd snd_cards_limit=1 snd_major=116
------------ snap -----------------------------
I figured it would be simple to then reconfigure the sound card again with
yast. However, trying to do that results in exactly the same kernel panic
(when using alsa) or in an error message (when using oss) saying that the
module could not be loaded.
Any ideas what could be wrong and where I could find a solution?
Thank you very much in advance, Alex.
