As I wrote in my other mail, Scanjet 5300C is normally supported by Sane even
if it is maybe not straightforward. If Yast does not mention the scanner it is
probably because your version of SuSE does not have the latest version of
Sane. It happened already to me. Thus download the latest source file of
Sane-backend and compile it. The sane source files compile without problem in
SuSE.
The only problem I had was with xsane, the graphical interface to use with
Gimp. I wanted to install the SuSE package but Yast insisted to install its own
outdated version of Sane. That was before I knew that checkinstall existed.
