Hi Ryan,
I've used sendmail, MailScanner, SpamAssassian and McAfee
on a Linux VDS system. The only part you'd have to pay
for is the McAfee. MailScanner will automatically download
new virus definitions.
When used with a few DNSRBL lists, the combination blocked
well over 99.9% of the spam on my site, which processes about
1000 messages per day. I know of another major site that
uses this combo and processes well over 100,000 messages per
day. That particular site uses a quad-Xeon Dell server.
http://freshmeat.net should have the pointers that you'd need.
Regards,
Lew Wolfgang
