At work we recently purchased a number of computers that use the ASUS A&V8X-MX
motherboard. I am the only one using Linux, so Linux compatibility wasn't
really checked when they were purchased. The motherboard includes onboard
video supplied by the VIA KM400 chip.

I have done a lot of searching using Google, and have found many problem
    reports, but not any solutions.

The highest resolution I can get is 1025x 764 @75 Hz, using the vesa driver.
I understand that the problem is that support for the KM400 chip isn't yet
present in SuSE 9.0. the truly puzzling thing is that putting in the nvidia
TNT2 AGP card from my old computer doesn't solve the problem. I think the
problem is that SuSE detects TWO chips, and uses the wrong one.

    let me explain.

the command sax2 -p yields the following results:

Chip: 0 is -> Via Technologies Inc VIA VT 320500:00:0 0x1106 0x3205 PCI via
Chip: 1 is -> Via Technologies Inc VIA VT 720501:00:0 0x1106 0x7205 AGP via

This is when there is no video card in the computer, just the onboard video.

When I put in my video card, the command sax2 -p yields the same information
for Chip: 0, and supplies the information for the nvidia card for Chip: 1.

If I run the command sax2, logged in as root, and from the command line
(runlevel 3), sax2 gives an error messsage and cannot run.

    If I run the command sax2 -c 1 1=nv

sax2 loads and runs perfectly, and allows me to set the resolution to
1280x1024@85 Hz. It tests that resolution and everything works fine. I save
the configuration. I login as myself, type startx, and everything blows up.
Seems to give me a resolution like 320x200. I do a Ctl_Alt-F2 and login as
    root and do a shutdown.

I looked at the startx file to see if there are any parameters to give it to
force it to use Chip: 1. Unfortunately my bash skills are laughable, and I
    couldn't figure it out.

Going to both the VIA and ASUS web sites reveal binary drivers for RedHat and
Mandrake. I tried those and that didn't help, although perhaps I did that
    incorrectly.

I would be happy to use my old video card, if I could just get it to work.

Can't get sound either, but I will leave that for another post :)

    Mike
