Tom,
Have you checked to see that you have a symlink from your
Firebird/Firefox plugins directory to the java? That should be all
that is needed. If you haven't installed another Java and are using
the SuSE installed version, then just go to /opt/mozilla/lib/plugins
and copy that over to your firebird plugins.
