    Thanks to this list I've got rid of my problems - I only hope I
    remember the cure after the next upgrade.

    1. The User menu popped up because I was in the habit of clicking on
    several items under mc configuration without consideration, in this
    case Auto Menus - thanks Carlos E. R.

    2. The garbage on mc's command line was removed by adding the
    following to my ~/.bashrc: PS1='\u@\h:\w>' - Thanks to James
