The fix was to go into the gdmsetup tool as root (gdmsetup) and enable
XDMCP. After doing this I get a graphical login via gdm in a vnc
session. Now it is not exactly 100% the same as when I login from the
console, but it works and that is all I care about right now. The
background is still grey, but I have a gnome login box, and after I
login everthing looks as you would expect.
