    I used wvdial and my internal modem works fine! The external does not,
    however, allow any throughput. I think the reason is that, though it finds
    the correct IP addresses it is looking for www.suse.de rather than my ISP
    name. I had this problem once before and I *think* I fixed it by removing
    www.suse.de but I'll be darned if I can find the config file or script in
    which that was planted! I am pretty sure I got to it via yast but am not
    sure where.

    The relevant output from wvdial is as follows:
    <SNIP>
    --> pppd: primary DNS address 205.247.104.20
    --> pppd: secondary DNS address 205.247.104.21
    --> pppd: Script /etc/ppp/ip-up run successful
    --> Default route Ok.
    --> warning, can't find address for `www.suse.de' [NOT MY ISP NAME!!]
    --> warning, address lookup does not work
    --> Nameserver (DNS) failure, the connection may not work. [CORRECT!]
    --> Connected... Press Ctrl-C to disconnect
