I'd keep this one short and still probably still get whipped for the OT
    subject.
I started using the first version after Linus posted the announcement to
the Minix mailing list, I immediately downloaded it and tried it, liked
it. Development was swift, e.g the discussion of porting X to Linux
started and two weeks later there was X with olvwm up and running. I
soon started turning my Minix partitions over to Linux and within
months, all Minix was gone as you had to port most things to Minix, a
hit-and-miss affair at best. I next got rid of my Win31 partition and
installed and ran it under Sun WABI, a pity Sun didn't opensource WABI
so it could be developed beyond Win3.1, it ran perfectly. The first
bootloader was bootlace/shoelace from Minix, so I didn't have to convert
    my Minix partitions.
KDE predated GNOME. RedHat and I think Caldera both refused to ship KDE
because of the then QT license and used YEUKKK! CDE (an aberation that
still exists on Solaris) instead, it still looks like someone's quick
attempt to write a GUI, then abandoned it through lack of time or interest.
    Regards
    Sid.
