    Dear Scott,

Welcome to the list. You should know that the majority of the folks here
migrated from M$ to Linux; some a long time ago, some recently.

Try to pose a clear question for us to assist you. We are users like you and
we can offer alot of help to nuubies because most of us have probably seen
the same probs you have and will run into. Ask as many questions as you
like, but ask only one per email. That helps you to keep track of the
    replies.

I have a Pentium III 1.266GHz Dual Processor PC running SUSE 8.2 kernel 2.4.x
w/ 512MB RAM (PC133) and a pure IDE-ATA disk sub-sys and it is turning out
SETI (Search for ET Intelligence) units at the rate of 5 or 6 per 24 hr day.
I run four SETI clients (yes that is 2 per CPU) at all times. Right next to
that PC is my M$ XP sys running on a single Athlon XP2600, 512MB RAM (DDR
PC2700) on a pure IDE-ATA disk sub-sys and no matter what I do it can only
turn out 2 SETI units per day and that is with only 1 client going at any one
time because it boggs down too much if I try 2 clients.

So XP doing work on a P4 equlivent running at 2.6GHz cannot even make it to
1/2 of what a Linux (SUSE 8.2 running the 'poor performance' 2.4.x kernel)
can do on one P-III 1.266 GHz. Think about those numbers; when you see
articles that benchmark sys performance and show 10 or 20 % difference
between different HW they proclaim it as a "Big Boost" worth buying into. But
they don't tell much about the Operating Sys and how it affects the ability
    to do work.

    Good Luck,

    PeterB
