What exactly is that "something"? My crystal ball is out for repairs.

Check your hardisk using the manufacturer provided check program, usually
in the form of a self booting floppy you can download.
Supposing your HD and bios support "smart" (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and
Reporting Technology) use "smartctl /dev/hda --all" and you will see the
log of the hda hardrive errors, attributes, etc.
That program can also test your hard drive, even with the system in use.
