This has been mentioned several times already on this list, you might
want to search the mail archives for many of your answers. Had you
actually read the instructions included with the ATI drivers, you might
find that you could no longer use the conventional means of setting
resolutions, 3d, etc for your card. Furthermore, in trying to do so,
you lose those things the driver tried to do after installing.
The 9600 is supported natively by SuSE 9.0, so there is no real need to
use the ATI drivers as the kernel module is already present for 3d and
using the card. Sax2 will configure everything for you. YaST2 is good
and getting better, but using sax2 is the better choice.
You might try removing the ATI rpm and dropping down to init 3 to use
sax2, but it's a good possibility you have things wanky trying to mix
the two. Nice thing about Linux is that it can be fixed.
