I'm back again, my machine is still running very slow on trying to start
applications. I've removed the 'desktop' item out of my grub config and it's
    still the same.
I have now noticed however that programs start a lot faster when I'm connected
to the internet via dial-up. Break the link and it all slows down again.

Anybody any idea's where I can look?

    Thanks
    Phil
