Martin,
I am running 9.0 pro on a K6-2 450 @ 256 MB. X is just plain slow, but
the machine is a screamer otherwise. I use the box as a headless server in
runlevel 3 and simply use ssh to interact with the box. It is great in that
sense. Use top to get the details on memory usage. I'm not sure there are
any tweeks you can use to make kde/gnome respond quicker. Depending on what
you need, you might try a lighter weight display manager like icewn, etc...
