Look for a real hardware modem. You didn't mention which release of
SuSe you had installed. There are RPM's for Lucent based winmodems
starting with 9.0. My 9.0 files server with one of those was not
detected and setup, I had to find the RPM and install that. More
resources can be found by searching google for linmodems.
