[SLE] YaST server list

I work with a guy who installed 9.1, but when he went to do the
online updates, he got a message indicating that the server list
couldn't be written to disk.
I don't have the exact message, and I didn't watch him do the install,
so I don't know if he did it right (he's a Windows tech, but wants to
convert), but is there anything there that sounds familiar?
As the guy who brought SUSE into our shop back in '97, I feel somewhat
responsible to the newbies, but I do not have the time to diagnose
this at length.
Does anything obvious spring to mind? He logged in as himself and
did the usual YaST thing that starts kdesu...
